Learning Lounge is a private school in Pine Bluff built around a simple belief: children are larger than the labels placed on them. Its personalized model combines academics with social-emotional development, entrepreneurship, hands-on learning and therapeutic supports so students can discover their strengths and see a future for themselves in their own community. The small but mighty school currently serves 73 students, with more than 90 students on its waiting list, with ambitious plans to take its rural-proud DNA statewide — and beyond. In a state defying expectations and raising achievement in communities long written off, Learning Lounge is showing what can happen when opportunity expands — and how a rising tide can indeed lift all boats.
Their Story
The school began with founder Kanesha Adams’ own family. After she adopted her young niece, who had lost both parents and became afraid to go to kindergarten, Adams set out to build the kind of place a child would feel safe, known and excited to enter. What began as an answer for one child became a school for an entire community — and now a model for rural Arkansas. And with this dynamo leading the way, we can already imagine Learning Lounges taking root in rural communities across the country.

Winning their award
The $1 million Yass Prize gives Learning Lounge the capital to move from a strong Pine Bluff school to a rural network. Plans include a new site in Altheimer in fall 2027, additional Arkansas communities including Stuttgart in the pipeline, expanded therapeutic supports and stronger capacity in general. The organization projects approximately 150 students across its network by fall 2027 and 250–350 by fall 2028.
