Valor Education
Texas
Valor brings the Great Books, poetry, art, science, friendship and wonder into tuition-free public schools — offering thousands of Texas students a classical education aimed not simply at college, but at a full human life.
About
Valor’s classical K–12 schools educate the whole person through the liberal arts, advanced math and science, fine arts, character formation and deep relationships. Its guiding phrase is “Wisdom through Wonder.” Students encounter great books and ideas not simply to accumulate knowledge, but to pursue wisdom, virtue and friendship. Nearly 5,000 students now attend Valor schools, with thousands more families seeking a place.
Their Story
This charter school’s roots go back to founder David Williams’ public-school classroom in New Jersey, where he created an integrated humanities program bringing art, music, literature and philosophy together for his students. That conviction — that education should awaken the whole human person — followed him into classical charter schools in Arizona and Texas. In 2016, he and a team of longtime educators, including Stephen Gordon, created Valor to make that kind of education available tuition-free to far more families.

Stephen Gordon
“Perhaps my most formative experience was spending a year volunteering full-time in an inner-city mission program in Philadelphia. My time there deepened my desire to serve students from a wide range of backgrounds who otherwise might never receive a classical education. Being a founding member of Valor Education and continuing in its service as Superintendent has been the fulfillment of that desire.”
1
Why they stand out
Valor stands out for the depth of the educational experience and the extraordinary scale of family demand for it — especially in Texas, where an increasingly pluralistic education landscape is giving families more ways to choose. This is not classical education reserved for an elite few. Valor is a tuition-free public-school network with enormous waiting lists, rigorous teacher formation and the ability to create hundreds of new seats while preserving an unusually strong culture centered on wonder, humility, friendship and human dignity.

How they STOP for education
Valor is Outstanding in both its educational vision and extraordinary family demand.
Recurring charter funding provides a strong base for Sustainability.
And there is a deeply Permissionless streak in how the network has grown — opening in unconventional spaces rather than waiting for the perfect building or perfect moment.

Winning their award
The $500,000 award will help Valor accelerate roughly 600 additional seats for fall 2027 and advance its next expansion into Leander, Kyle and ultimately Dallas–Fort Worth — giving hundreds more families access to an education thousands are already waiting to choose.
