Salt & Light Academy for Boys
Philadelphia, PA
For boys growing up amid some of Philadelphia’s toughest circumstances, Salt & Light creates something deliberately different: a small, deeply supportive school built around personalized academics, character, leadership and the belief that every young man can reach his highest potential.
About
Based in Germantown, Salt & Light Academy for Boys is an all-boys hybrid microschool designed for young men who need far more than a conventional academic program. Many of its students are growing up amid the pressures of poverty, violence, instability and broken family structures. Salt & Light surrounds them with personalized academics, restorative practices, leadership development, close coaching, family partnership and a nurturing environment where each boy is known, challenged and supported. The goal is not simply academic progress, but helping young men build the confidence, discipline and sense of possibility to reach their highest potential.
Their Story
Jéneen and Omar Barlow are educators, parents and serial entrepreneurs who have spent years creating and leading schools, mentoring young people and building leadership programs. Salt & Light brought those strands together around a conviction they had seen repeatedly in their own work and family: boys learn differently, relationships come before transformation, and young men flourish when adults see both who they are and who they can become. Their school grew not from theory, but from years spent raising, teaching and mentoring boys.

Jéneen Winters Barlow
“Boys begin as strangers, who then become friends, who become brothers, and all of them become our sons.”

Why they stand out
Salt & Light stands out not only for what it does for boys, but for how it made the school possible. Rather than wait for a traditional district pathway to approve and operate a new school model, the founders partnered with Pennwood Cyber Charter. The cyber school delivers the academic program and public funding follows the student, while Salt & Light focuses on what it does best: providing the on-site learning environment, coaching, relationships, interventions, leadership development and daily support these boys need. It is an ingenious division of labor — using an existing public-school platform to create an entirely different educational experience on the ground. The partnership has become the financial backbone of the model and a potential path to serving many more boys.

How they STOP for education
Salt & Light is Transformational in the way it surrounds boys with the academic, relational and character supports they need to thrive.
Its Pennwood Cyber Charter partnership is both Sustainable and Permissionless — rather than waiting for a new school to be created through traditional channels, the founders used an existing public-school platform to deliver academics while building the on-site experience themselves.
The result is an Outstanding model that combines public funding with deeply personal coaching and support.

Winning their award
The $500,000 finalist award will help Salt & Light expand the number of boys it can serve in Philadelphia, strengthen the operational and funding model beneath that growth, and lay the groundwork for replication in other communities seeking an all-boys, relationship-centered alternative.
